Choosing the Correct Arcade Free Play and High Score Save Kit
Arcade upgrade kits are designed around specific games and hardware configurations. Two cabinets running the same game can contain different PCB revisions, processors, ROM versions, conversions, repairs, or replacement boards. For that reason, the exact arcade PCB inside the cabinet is more important than the cabinet artwork or game title alone when confirming compatibility.
Designed for Original Arcade Hardware
HighScoreSaves kits are intended for compatible original arcade PCBs unless a product page specifically states support for another board type. Before ordering, confirm the game, manufacturer, PCB number or revision when available, main processor, CPU socket, and any existing modifications or repairs.
If you are unsure which board is installed in your cabinet, use our guide to identifying an original arcade PCB before ordering .
What HighScoreSaves Kits Add
- Free Play: Start games without adding coins while retaining normal coin operation.
- High score and initials saving: Supported scores and initials are stored locally without relying on a battery.
- Original arcade hardware: HighScoreSaves kits operate with the compatible original arcade PCB and preserve the original game's core controls, sound, timing, and gameplay.
- Game-specific features: Depending on the kit, additional options may include attract-mode sound, diagnostics, difficulty settings, screen-flip options, rapid fire, additional score tables, or other title-specific features.
- Optional Wi-Fi: Selected HighScoreSaves kits can upload qualifying scores over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi while continuing to save supported scores and settings locally on the kit.
Single-Game, Multigame, Remix, Rearranged and Braze Kits
This category contains several different types of arcade upgrades. Single-game HighScoreSaves kits add features to one supported game. Multigame kits add multiple compatible games or game versions to supported original hardware. Remix and rearranged products provide alternate stages, layouts, challenges, or newly arranged versions of classic games.
Braze Technologies kits are separate third-party arcade upgrades offered for selected games. Their features, menu operation, installation method, and score-saving capabilities vary by product, so HighScoreSaves-specific instructions should not automatically be applied to a Braze kit.
Installation on Compatible Arcade PCBs
Most HighScoreSaves single-game kits install at the original arcade PCB's main processor socket. The original CPU is removed from its socket, installed on the HighScoreSaves daughterboard, and the daughterboard is then installed in the original CPU location. When the processor is already socketed, installation normally does not require soldering.
If the original CPU is soldered directly to the PCB, a qualified technician may need to install a socket before the kit can be fitted. Multigame, Remix, rearranged, and Braze products may have different installation requirements. Always use the instructions for the exact kit being installed.
Before Ordering an Arcade Upgrade Kit
- Confirm the exact game and original arcade PCB.
- Check the PCB revision, CPU type, and whether the processor is socketed.
- Review the individual product page for exact features and compatibility.
- Read the matching installation guide before removing the CPU, ROMs, or other components.
- If compatibility is uncertain, photograph the complete PCB, CPU area, ROM labels, board numbers, and any modifications before ordering.
HighScoreSaves Installation Guides and Technical Resources
HighScoreSaves provides game-specific installation documentation for supported arcade upgrade kits. Available guides may show the original PCB, CPU location, Pin 1 orientation, daughterboard placement, program ROM locations, completed installation, settings, and troubleshooting information.
Before beginning an installation, disconnect cabinet power and review the documentation for the exact game and kit. For additional operating information after installation, the HighScoreSaves Tips and Tricks guide covers common menus, settings, and kit functions.
