Choosing the Correct Galaga Arcade PCB Upgrade

The HighScoreSaves Galaga high score save kit is designed for documented compatible original Galaga arcade hardware. The current installation guide illustrates three different PCB layouts, and the physical installation details are not identical between them.

Before ordering, identify the exact board in the cabinet, locate the Z80 processor, confirm that the required locations are properly socketed, and compare your board directly with the current installation guide.

Documented Galaga PCB Compatibility

Midway Galaga PCB The current installation guide illustrates the Midway Galaga CPU board as one of the supported layouts. The documented secondary installation location is identified at 3HJ.
Namco Galaga PCB The current guide separately illustrates the Namco CPU board. Its documented corresponding installation location is identified at 3F.
Documented Galag Bootleg PCB A specific Galag bootleg PCB is also illustrated in the current guide. This layout has additional installation instructions and should not be treated as proof that every Galaga clone or reproduction PCB is compatible.

Galaga Z80 Processor Requirements

The Galaga kit requires a compatible Z80 processor. The current installation guide documents transferring the existing Z80 from the original PCB to the HighScoreSaves Z80 daughter card.

Pin 1 orientation must be maintained when the processor is moved to the daughterboard. The completed daughterboard is then installed into the documented Z80 socket on the original Galaga PCB.

If the required Z80 is soldered directly to the arcade PCB instead of installed in a compatible 40-pin socket, proper processor removal and socket installation are required before fitting the kit.

PCB-Specific Installation Differences

Midway — 3HJ The current guide identifies the documented Midway installation location at 3HJ. Use the current PCB photograph to confirm orientation before installing any daughterboard or supplied component.
Namco — 3F The corresponding documented Namco location is 3F. Do not assume the Midway and Namco board layouts place components in the same physical locations.
Galag Bootleg — 2732 at J4 The current guide instructs the installer to place the additional supplied 2732 EPROM at J4, not K4, on the documented Galag bootleg PCB. The appropriate bootleg option must also be selected in the kit menu.
Check Daughterboard Clearance The guide specifically instructs installers to make sure no original PCB component or test point contacts the underside of the installed daughterboard.
