Red Baron High Score Save Kit for Original Atari 6502 Vector Hardware

Research the Braze Red Baron High Score Save Kit for compatible original Atari Red Baron arcade hardware. The daughter card adds permanent high score saving and ROM Saver functionality while keeping the original Atari vector PCB, controls, sound hardware, and dedicated arcade platform in service.

Important: The Braze Red Baron Kit Does Not Add Free Play

This Braze Technologies upgrade provides permanent high score saving and ROM Saver functionality. It does not add Free Play. Normal Red Baron coin operation remains in use.

This is an original-PCB upgrade rather than a replacement game board, reproduction PCB, generic multicade system, or software-emulation platform. It is intended for collectors, restorers, and operators who want permanent score retention while preserving compatible original Atari Red Baron hardware.

The Braze daughter card installs at the original 6502 processor location. The original 6502 is transferred from the Atari PCB to the daughter card, and the assembled upgrade is then installed back into the original CPU socket.

Braze Red Baron High Score Save Kit Installation Guide

Before ordering, verify that your cabinet contains compatible original Atari Red Baron hardware and confirm the 6502 processor and socket configuration shown in the installation guide.

Red Baron Hardware and 6502 Compatibility

The Braze daughter card installs at the documented 6502 processor location on the original Red Baron boardset. The original 6502 is removed from the Atari PCB, installed on the daughter card, and the assembled daughter card is then installed back into the original CPU socket.

  • Designed for compatible original Atari Red Baron arcade hardware
  • Uses the original Atari vector PCB rather than replacing the game board
  • Interfaces with the original 6502 processor
  • The 6502 is a 40-pin device located at M3 on the documented boardset
  • Provides permanent high score saving and ROM Saver functionality
  • Does not add Free Play
  • Requires a suitable socketed 6502 processor location before the daughter card can be installed

Understanding the Braze Red Baron High Score Save Upgrade

The Braze Red Baron upgrade adds permanent high score saving and ROM Saver functionality to compatible original Atari arcade hardware without replacing the original game board. The daughter card works with the existing 6502-based PCB architecture so the original Red Baron hardware remains the operating platform.

The Braze Red Baron kit does not add Free Play. It is specifically a high score save and ROM Saver upgrade. Normal coin operation remains part of the original Red Baron hardware configuration.

Red Baron uses Atari monochrome vector hardware built around a 6502 processor. For an original-hardware restoration, identifying the actual PCB and processor configuration is more useful than relying only on the cabinet artwork or control panel when determining upgrade compatibility.

What the Braze Red Baron Kit Adds

The Braze daughter card is intended to preserve Red Baron scores while continuing to operate the game on compatible original Atari hardware.

  • Permanent High Score Saving: Retains the supported Red Baron high score table after cabinet power is turned off
  • Top 7 Score Saving: Stores the supported Red Baron high scores according to the Braze kit design
  • ROM Saver: Provides the supported game-program functionality through the Braze daughter card
  • Original Hardware: Continues using compatible original Atari Red Baron vector hardware
  • No Free Play: The Braze Red Baron kit does not add coin-free operation

Atari 6502 Vector Hardware and the Braze Daughter Card

The Braze Red Baron kit interfaces directly with the original 6502 CPU. The processor is removed from its socket at the documented M3 location, installed in the 40-pin socket on the daughter card, and the assembled daughter card is then installed in the original CPU position.

Correct Pin 1 orientation is critical for both the processor and daughter card. The Braze installation documentation warns that installing either device backwards can permanently damage the hardware.

Original Atari PCB Upgrade vs. Replacement Hardware

A daughter-card upgrade differs from replacing the original game hardware with a reproduction board, modern replacement PCB, generic multicade, or software-emulation platform. The compatible original Atari Red Baron boardset remains in the cabinet and continues to provide the game's dedicated vector hardware.

This approach is useful for collectors and restorers who want permanent score retention while keeping the original Atari hardware architecture in service.

Why Keep the Original Red Baron PCB?

  • Retains compatible original Atari vector hardware in the cabinet
  • Keeps the original Red Baron PCB as the operating game platform
  • Continues using the original 6502-based arcade architecture
  • Avoids replacing the boardset with a generic multicade or emulation system
  • Adds Braze high score save and ROM Saver functionality through a removable daughter-card installation

Red Baron ROM Saver Function

Braze also describes the Red Baron kit as a ROM Saver. The daughter card provides the supported game-program functionality used by the kit, reducing reliance on the original program-ROM socket connections while the original Atari boardset remains in operation.

What to Check Before Choosing the Red Baron Kit

Vintage Atari boards may have been repaired, converted, or fitted with replacement components during decades of service. Inspect the actual boardset before ordering rather than assuming compatibility from the cabinet exterior alone.

  • Confirm that the cabinet contains compatible original Atari Red Baron hardware
  • Locate the 40-pin 6502 processor at the documented M3 location
  • Confirm that the 6502 processor is present and functioning
  • Determine whether the CPU location has a suitable socket for daughter-card installation
  • Inspect the CPU pins, socket, and nearby PCB traces for damage or previous repair work
  • Remember that this Braze kit does not add Free Play
  • Review the Braze Red Baron Installation Guide before ordering or installing the upgrade.
