Zaxxon Free Play and High Score Save Kit for original Sega arcade PCB

The HighScoreSaves Zaxxon Free Play and High Score Save Kit upgrades compatible original Sega Zaxxon arcade hardware with permanent Top 6 score and initials saving, Free Play, adjustable attract sounds, menu-driven settings, separate lives-based score tables, Backup and Restore, Flip Screen, ROM Saver, attract-mode options, and optional Wi-Fi leaderboard functionality while continuing to use the original Sega PCB, Z80 processor, controls, graphics, sound, and gameplay.

Zaxxon Compatibility & Requirements

Compatible PCB: Compatible original Sega Zaxxon arcade hardware

Processor: Original Z80 processor from the Zaxxon arcade board

CPU Socket: Compatible 40-pin socket required at the original Z80 location

Cabinet Support: Upright and cocktail cabinets using compatible original hardware

Special Wiring: No special cabinet wiring required for normal installation

Installation: Plug-in installation when the original Z80 is already socketed. The original Z80 is removed from the Sega PCB, installed on the HighScoreSaves daughter card, and the assembled kit is installed in the vacated CPU socket. If the Z80 is soldered directly to the PCB, a qualified arcade technician must install a compatible 40-pin socket before fitting the kit.

What's Included

Base Zaxxon Kit: 1 HighScoreSaves Z80 daughter card

The original Z80 processor from your Zaxxon PCB is transferred to the daughter card during installation.

Settings Menu Access

Hold Player 1 Start for approximately 4 seconds while turning on the cabinet to access the supported Zaxxon settings menu.

Before Restoring Cabinet Power

Verify the original Z80 orientation, Pin 1 alignment, compatible 40-pin socket, daughter-card seating, and all installation steps before applying power. If the original processor is soldered directly to the PCB, have a qualified arcade technician install the required socket first.

Standard vs. Wi-Fi Kit

Standard Kit

Permanently saves supported scores, initials, and settings locally. It includes Free Play, adjustable attract sounds, separate score tables, menu-driven settings, Backup and Restore, Flip Screen, ROM Saver, and other supported local features without requiring an internet connection.

Wi-Fi Enabled Kit

Includes the same local score-saving and gameplay functionality while also allowing qualifying scores to be submitted to the HighScoreSaves online leaderboard after initials are entered.

Wi-Fi can be disabled without affecting local score saving or normal gameplay. Wi-Fi-enabled kits use compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks.

Is this the HighScoreSaves or Braze Zaxxon kit?

This product is the Zaxxon kit designed and supported by HighScoreSaves. A separate Braze Technologies Zaxxon kit is also available.

What comes with the base Zaxxon kit?

The base kit includes one HighScoreSaves Z80 daughter card.

How many scores and initials are saved?

The kit permanently stores the Top 6 supported scores and player initials.

Does the kit support Free Play and normal coin operation?

Yes. Free Play can be enabled while normal coin operation remains available.

Does installation require soldering?

No soldering is required when the original Z80 is already installed in a compatible socket. If the processor is soldered directly to the PCB, a qualified arcade technician must install a compatible 40-pin socket first.

Is a separate service or test switch required?

No. Supported settings are accessed through the kit's on-screen menu system.

Can the attract sounds be adjusted?

Yes. Attract sounds can be selected for 25%, 50%, or 100% of supported attract-mode rotations.

Does the kit maintain separate high score tables?

Yes. Independent supported score tables are maintained for 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-life settings.

Can the game display be rotated?

Yes. Flip Screen rotates the display 180° through the on-screen menu.

Does this kit change the original Zaxxon gameplay?
