Darksoft CPS1 | CPS1.5 Multigame Kit

Product information "Darksoft CPS1 | CPS1.5 Multigame Kit"

Darksoft CPS1/CPS1.5 Multigame Kit Overview

The Darksoft CPS1/CPS1.5 Multigame Kit allows supported CPS1 and CPS1.5 QSound games to run on compatible original Capcom arcade hardware. The multigame PCB replaces the original CPS1 B-board while retaining a compatible original A-board and C-board.

Games are selected from a compatible microSD card with the included LCD selector and written to flash memory. The selected game remains stored after power is removed and stays loaded until a different title is written.

Flat Rate U.S. Shipping: $35.99. Insurance included. Ships with Signature Required. Ship two Darksoft Multigame Kits for the same shipping price.

What Is Included

  • Darksoft CPS1/CPS1.5 multigame PCB
  • Sound-board assembly
  • Filter board
  • JAMMA finger board
  • LCD game selector
  • 30 cm LCD ribbon cable
  • Two female DuPont jumper wires
  • Two PCB spacers
  • Replacement PAL chip

The shipping box contains two layers of components. Remove the main multigame PCB from the upper antistatic-foam layer to inspect the components stored underneath.

CPS1 A-Board Compatibility

  • Requires a compatible original Capcom CPS1 A-board with its sound section fully populated.
  • A-boards originally used with CPS1.5 games may lack the required sound section and are not compatible in that condition.
  • Long A-board model 88617A-7B is not compatible.
  • Most supported A-boards use either a 10 MHz or 12 MHz configuration.
  • For the closest original timing, match the selected game configuration to the appropriate 10 MHz or 12 MHz A-board.

Compatible Original C-Boards

The multigame kit requires an original CPS1 C-board using a B-21 chip and original battery-backed key support. Compatible models are:

  • 90630C-4
  • 90631C-5
  • 92641C-1

If the compatible C-board still has its original battery installed, the battery must be removed so the multigame kit can program the required keys.

The kit is designed for original C-boards. Previous modification wires or unofficial alterations may need to be removed before installation. Confirm that the C-board works correctly before connecting it to the multigame PCB.

C-Board Switch Setting

  • Set the multigame PCB’s C-board switch to ON when using a 90630C-4 or 92641C-1 C-board.
  • Also use the ON setting when the C-board does not have the original CNI01 and CNI02 control connectors.
  • Leave the switch OFF when using a 90631C-5 C-board with two PAL chips.

Installation Overview

Replace the A-Board PAL

Remove the existing socketed PAL chip from position PRG1 at 9K on the original A-board and install the replacement PAL supplied with the kit. Use an appropriate chip-removal tool and avoid bending the pins.

Install the C-Board First

Install the compatible original C-board onto the multigame PCB before installing the multigame PCB onto the A-board. Support the multigame PCB from underneath and press the C-board into place gently and evenly.

Install the Included Spacers

Fit the two supplied plastic spacers into the locations shown in the installation guide. Do not place them in the smaller mounting location reserved for the optional spinner board.

Install the Reset and QSound Wires

The two included DuPont wires connect the multigame PCB’s RESET and QSOUND headers to the documented solder points on the original A-board. These connections require soldering.

Install the Multigame PCB

Carefully align all four multigame-board connectors with the original A-board. Confirm that every connector is aligned before applying pressure, then press the board into place evenly until all connectors are fully seated.

Connect the Filter Board and JAMMA Finger

Install the JAMMA finger board in the filter board with its keyed edge facing outward. The filter board connects the original A-board and multigame PCB and provides the external connection to the arcade cabinet or supergun.

Critical Sound-Board Orientation

The CPS1.5 QSound or FPGA sound board can physically be inserted in the wrong orientation. Installing it backward can damage the sound board and the main multigame PCB.

Before applying power, compare the sound-board orientation with the photographs and silkscreen markings in the installation guide. Press the board into its connector gently and evenly, then secure it with the supplied hardware.

microSD Card and Game Files

  • A compatible microSD card is required and is not included.
  • Game software is not supplied with the multigame kit.
  • Prepare supported game folders using the file structure required by the installation guide.
  • CPS1 and CPS1.5 QSound configurations use different audio-file layouts.
  • Standard unprepared MAME sets may not use the file structure required by the multigame kit.
  • Only use game data that you are legally entitled to possess and operate.
  • Do not remove the microSD card or interrupt power while a game, firmware file, or CPLD update is being written.

LCD Game Selection and Flash Loading

Selecting a Game

Connect the supplied ribbon cable between the multigame PCB and LCD selector. Use the selector controls to browse the supported titles on the microSD card and choose the game to write.

Loading Progress

The LCD displays asterisks while flash memory is being erased or game data is being written. Two status LEDs are illuminated while programming is active.

Normal Display Artifacts

Temporary graphics artifacts may appear while the board is in reset and programming a game. This is expected during the loading process.

LCD Contrast

Adjust LCD contrast with the trim control labeled 202 on the main multigame PCB when the display appears too light or too dark.

CPS1 and CPS1.5 Audio Adjustment

  • Standard CPS1 game volume is controlled with the original volume knob on the A-board.
  • The multigame PCB provides an access opening near the Z80 for reaching the original A-board volume control.
  • CPS1.5 QSound game volume over the JAMMA connection is controlled with the dedicated potentiometer on the multigame PCB.
  • If the kit uses the FPGA sound-board version, follow the qsound.bin programming instructions in the installation guide before initial operation.

Important Before Installation

  • Confirm the exact A-board and C-board models before ordering.
  • Do not use long A-board model 88617A-7B.
  • Do not use an A-board without its CPS1 sound section populated.
  • Remove the battery from a compatible original C-board when one remains installed.
  • Do not force the C-board, multigame PCB, filter board, or sound board onto misaligned connectors.
  • Install the sound board only in the orientation shown in the guide.
  • The reset and QSound connections require precise soldering to the original A-board.
  • Use an experienced arcade technician when you are not comfortable with chip removal, soldering, or original arcade-PCB handling.
  • Disconnect power and discharge static before handling any board or component.

Outstanding multigame solution for CPS-1 hardware

I have several original CPS-1 boards, and the Darksoft CPS-1 Multigame Kit has completely changed how I use them. The installation process was straightforward, the documentation was clear, and everything worked exactly as expected. Being able to switch between so many classic Capcom games without swapping boards is incredibly convenient.
The hardware quality is excellent, game compatibility has been solid, and the menu is easy to navigate. It's obvious this kit was designed with enthusiasts and collectors in mind. My order arrived quickly, was packaged securely, and HighScoreSaves answered all of my questions before I purchased.
If you're looking for a reliable way to enjoy your original CPS-1 hardware while reducing wear from constantly changing boards, this is a fantastic investment. I only wish I had bought it sooner

Bought a few of the Darksoft kits at the start of the year. Amazingly fast tracking provided and delivery was great. Kits were sent with signature required. Got them all installed and work great! Preordered the MVS coming out soon too! I'll be back for more (and tell all of my friends where to buy them at)

Thank you!
